It’s easy to think that if you go long to see your doctor you should be able to depart with a diagnosis of what’s wrong and a plan for the cure, or, at worst, management of the problem. I’m not a fan of the hospital dramas which seem to be a major feature of the TV schedules, but I was fascinated by what is, essentially, a series of medical detective stories. Many of the stories which appear in the column are recounted in this book, which is a look at the way in which doctors reach a diagnosis and how the method has changed (or not) over the years. She’s the technical advisor to the TV show as well as being the writer of the Diagnosis column in the New York Times. Summary: If you like hospital dramas on TV then you will love this book - but you may never quite trust your doctor in the same way again.įans of House, M.D.

A New York Times bestseller, this definitive history of Ukraine is “an exemplary account of Europe’s least-known large country” ( Wall Street Journal).Īs Ukraine is embroiled in an ongoing struggle with Russia to preserve its territorial integrity and political independence, celebrated historian Serhii Plokhy explains that today’s crisis is a case of history repeating itself: the Ukrainian conflict is only the latest in a long history of turmoil over Ukraine’s sovereignty. This was a thriller that hinged heavily on plot twists, but also foreshadowed them so heavily that they were obviously well in advance. Those few who do guess early won’t mind, as the pace and prose will keep them hooked. The most glorious thing about this novel is that even the most astute thriller reader won’t see where everything is going until the final threads are unknotted. Nath and Lydia are close in age, and they form a bond, but once Nath gets into Harvard, he is focused completely upon leaving and neglects his sister. They don’t see the two younger children, Nath and Hannah, either: both are so focused on Lydia that they neglect them. She plays up to them, and both parents so desperately want her to live their dreams that they never stop to see who she really is. James and Marilyn both imagine Lydia to be popular at school, brilliant in physics, when she is neither of those things. There is another absence in this book-the absence of any real attempt to truly understand the people who are the closest. So both parents pour all their thwarted dreams onto Lydia without stopping to think what Lydia really wants. Children and marriage put an end to those ambitions. But Marilyn is also a misfit in her way: she had ambitious about becoming a doctor at a time when women doctors were thin on the ground. Like his blonde, blue-eyed wife, Marilyn. He desperately wants to fit in and be like everyone else. James is Chinese-American, living in a small town in Ohio, where at the time, he was the only “oriental”. To her parents, Marilyn and James, Lydia was everything they weren’t. It’s a story about a family, flawed in the way families are, trying to make sense of the world around them. Jen Richards, an actor who has appeared in AMC’s “Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches” and FX’s “Better Things,” said she still feels a lot of jobs go to trans people in Hollywood to check off a diversity and inclusion mandate. This is a civil rights movement of our generation.” “We want to write those roles for those people. We have yet to even have truly a trans movie star,” Baloue said. “We don’t have a trans or non-binary ‘Will and Grace.’ We’re not in sitcoms. “Why are cisgender showrunners doing that to trans and nonbinary writers? We have the right to tell our own stories.”īaloue said it’s eye-opening to study the arenas where trans characters have been welcomed and where they haven’t. “You would never have a white showrunner create a Black show without Black writers and then hire a token Black person and say, ‘Hey, can you give us the greenlight on this Black story,’ ” Baloue said. Sydney Baloue, whose credits include the CW series “Tom Swift,” emphasized that representation matters when trans stories are told in mainstream media. “You have to commit to us as a community and show that you really care about our dignity, our lives and our economic vitality.” You can’t just put us in a few TV shows and then, when things get hard and when people are paying attention, stop greenlighting our projects,” Tobia said. If you want to stand with us, you need to stand with us. “Hollywood put us on a pedestal and then kind of abandoned us, frankly.
